To build your plumbing site, you’ll need to quickly set up hosting and your website name (e.g. www.YourPlumbingSite.com). We recommend Justhost* to do this for a couple of reasons:

  1. It’s quick and easy to set up. Once you login simply find the ‘WordPress 1 Click Install’ and follow the instructions. You’ll literally have a website site up within 10 minutes.
  2. It’s cheap. When you’re starting out you don’t want to pay more than you need to for a good core service. Justhost’s pricing is good.

The first thing you need to do is follow this guide (link opens in a new window) to get your website space, your website name, and basic website on WordPress. That guide is useful for anyone making a website, so if you’ve friends and family who also want to start a online business, show them that to get them started.

Once you have completed that stage of things, let’s work on kitting your site out so it starts bringing you in jobs.

* Disclosure: If you go on to buy hosting through my Justhost link, I get a commission from it. This doesn’t affect the price you pay, nor is it the reason I recommend this hosting company. I recommend it because I use them to host many of my websites, and they’re the best value hosting company for new websites. 🙂

What Pages Should Plumbers Include On Their Website?

Making a plumbing website is quite different from making a lot of other online businesses. In fact, there are only really four main types of pages you need to include:

Your Home Page

Your home page will be the first page people land on if they type in your website address. On this page you should include a nice overview of who you are, the services you offer, and how to contact you. You should also link to other pages from here.

Perhaps surprisingly, the home page will probably not be the most popular page on your website. If people start finding you through search engines, the pages people will likely first enter when they visit your website are:

Pages Which Mention The Areas You’re Available To Work In

Ok, so these will be some of the most important pages on your website. Let’s say your plumbing business is based around North London, and you can do jobs for people in Holloway Road, Camden, and Finsbury Park. What you’ll want to do is create a page for each of these areas, and on each of them advertise your services. You’ll also want to include the area name in the page, the postcodes, and your normal service details.

Why should you make these pages? Because you’ll make yourself easier to find via search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. When people search for ‘plumbers in Finsbury Park’ for example, you want your website to come up for that term. If you make your site using the guide I’ve provided and structure your website well, there’s a good chance you’ll appear on the first or second page for that term (and related ones) relatively quickly.

The people who search this kind of term will be highly targeted customers, so while you won’t get a huge amount of people searching for each term every day, when you target a lot of those terms and rank, the traffic you get to your site will be highly profitable. More details on how to get valuable prospects to your site at the end of this guide.

Your Contact Page

Make it easy for people to contact you Next, you’ll want to have a dedicated contact page on your site. While you should also have a way for people to contact you in your header or sidebar, it’s good business practice to have a dedicated page too.

Your ‘About Us’ Page

Lastly, you’ll want to include a ‘about us’ page. On this page you’ll want to give a quick overview of your company, and who’s in it. You’ll also want to include pictures of yourself and your workers, to allow people to see and feel comfortable with you. This will build trust.

There are also other types of pages you can add if you so feel, but these are the main ones you should get up.

Making It Easy For People To Contact And Hire You

When people land on your website, you want to make it as easy as possible for people to contact you. There are two main reasons for this:

  1. While your website will have a lot of information about who you are and what you do, it’s essentially a funnel to getting a job. And generally, people like talking to people they’re going to do business with on the phone. This helps show you’re a legit person, and that you understand their needs.
  2. When people contact you, it shows they’re that bit more serious about potentially hiring you. So make this easy for them.

You should always have your phone number clearly visible on every page of your website. Most likely in the header, but maybe also in your sidebar as well. That way if someone can’t find what they’re looking for or they just have a question, they can easily call you.

You may also want to add a contact form to your website, so people can email you for a quote. Your phone number is more important, but having a contact form is good to have as well.

You can easily add a contact form using a WordPress plugin such as Contact Form 7.

Adding Trust Elements To Your Site

Gas Safe Register Logo So now you have pages with the service you offer and make it easy for people to contact you, you want to add a few elements to your site which will have people becoming more open to doing business with you.

If you’ve implemented all of the above things while creating your website, you’ll have some in place already. Adding a phone number and a picture of you and your team on the about page for example makes it that much more likely people will trust and hire you.

Another thing you should also do is display the logos of any companies you’ve been trained through, that you’re registered with and the like. For example, if you’re in the UK and are on the Gas Safe Register, then you’ll want to display their logo. If you’re in another country such as the USA and are registered with a trustworthy company, use their logo and details instead. These elements increase the likeliness that people will hire you.
